I wrote this about Lucy when she was five.

“Lucy wants to know how life works and never stops asking questions. “Why don’t we fall off the earth when it turns around?” “Why do we have to work before we play at kindergarten?” “Why can’t you stay and play this afternoon?” Her other grandmother gave me some good advice that I’ve been able to use. I respond, “What do you think, Lucy?” and am often rewarded by new (and old) insights. “I guess you have to go and work so you can get money and pay the rent and buy groceries and clothes”. Hmmm – guess she’s been paying attention.”

These days our conversations continue to explore the meaning of life and relationships. She’s using her listening skills and attention to detail in her work caring for babies. I love to hear how she connects our experience together when she was little to her work today.
